KowTeff achieves its mission through two programs: A School of African Dance and an African Dance Company. Serving hundreds of students and thousands of audience members each year, KowTeff programs enrich the cultural life of communities by fostering self-awareness, pride, self-determination, and community development.

Founded in 1991, KowTeff African Dance Company is located in Brooklyn, New York and is operated under the Artistic Direction of Sewaa Codrington.
Our name embodies the goal that is the motivating factor by which the group functions: to safeguard and perpetuate the purity of the cultural values and principles of African tradition by providing quality entertainment and education to our community and national audiences.
KowTeff executes diverse folkloric components of the African Diaspora (African, African American, African Caribbean, etc.). The company's repertoire includes traditional music and dance, Chakaba (traditional African stilt walking), choral selections, dramatizations and more.
KowTeff's master dance class series features guest master artists (frequently from Africa) as teachers for intermediate and advanced students. We also hold dance classes in the local community for students of all levels to enjoy and learn traditional African dance technique and history. These classes are taught by seasoned community artists.
A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots. ~ Marcus Garvey.
The KowTeff School of African Dance is a non-profit organization with the mission of preserving and perpetuating the diverse folklore of African peoples through quality education and entertainment. The organization artistically and creatively uses dance, music (song and drum), and the spoken word to keep alive the cultural values, principles, and customs of African tradition. One method of perpetuating the culture is through KowTeff's African Dance Children's Company, which trains youth (boys and girls) of all ages in traditional African dance, music and folklore.
We strive to empower people of African descent by providing inspiring opportunities for them to celebrate and gain knowledge of their rich African heritage. We are committed to developing a positive cultural identity and self-pride, and reclaiming traditional African values and customs that promote healthy development of body, mind, spirit, and community.
